What is LTPO?

Definition & Application

LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) is a backplane driving technology for AMOLED displays that enables precise power consumption control through a hybrid architecture.

Hybrid Architecture

  • LTPS TFT – High electron mobility for high-speed response and high-brightness display
  • Oxide TFT (IGZO) – Extremely low leakage current for ultra-low power consumption

The Challenge Traditional LTPS Couldn’t Solve

High Power Consumption

Traditional LTPS-driven OLED displays must keep refreshing at high rates (60 Hz) even for static content to avoid flicker, draining battery life quickly.

LTPO Solution

LTPO combines the best of both worlds – high performance when needed and extreme power saving when content is static – delivering the perfect balance of display quality and battery life.

Core Advantages

1Hz

Supports 1 Hz Refresh Rate

Perfect for AOD (Always-On Display) and static images – refreshes only once per second.

Significantly Reduced Power Consumption

DDIC power: 60 Hz = 6.8 mW → 1 Hz = 2.3 mW

🔋

Extended Battery Life

Intelligent dynamic refresh rate adjustment for maximum efficiency.

Why LTPO Can Run at 1 Hz Without Flicker

Key Difference: Leakage Current

  • LTPO (Oxide TFT – IGZO)
Extremely low leakage → voltage held for a long time
  • Traditional LTPS TFT
Higher leakage → needs constant high-frequency refresh

LTPO TFT leakage < LTPS TFT leakage

Summary: TRULY LTPO Advantages

Hybrid Drive Architecture

Combines LTPS high performance + Oxide low leakage on the same substrate.

Ultra-Low Power Consumption

Adaptive dynamic refresh rate dramatically reduces energy use.

Overall Architectural Advantages

Enables true 1 Hz AOD for wearables and smartphones with outstanding battery life.
